ABSTRACT

The subjects of repair are usually those concrete structures constructed not earlier than one hundred years ago. Usually, the concrete is made of Portland cement. Concrete structures built in the 19th century are evaluated very rarely. The investigation of 19th century concrete structures is important because of the significant changes determining applicable properties of hydraulic binders which took place in the 19th century. An excellent example to assess the role of historical binders in structures is the Augustow Canal – a system of hydrotechnical structures built using water resistant artificial lime mortar.
