ABSTRACT

Despite her having published an autobiography in 1960, Forty Years: Memoirs from the Pages of a Newspaper, and despite her having written millions of words in that paper as an adult from 1912 to 1951, the early life of Charlotta A. Bass, as she titles herself in her memoir, remains mostly a mystery. She arrived in Los Angeles, California from Rhode Island on the other side of the continent in 1910, having been sent to the sunshine, as were many people, for her health. But also as did many people, she seems to have aimed to begin anew on the West Coast, revealing little about her life before California.
