Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker. He was born in 1863 and died in 1944. He was a major influence in German Expressionism. The Scream (sometimes called The Cry) was painted in 1893 and is regarded as an iconic painting of anguish. His work often included symbolic portrayal of themes like misery, sickness and death. The Scream is probably his most famous canvas and is a typical example of his expression of anguish, fear and isolation.
