ABSTRACT

In Chapter 11 we discussed the rationale behind offering family workshops to carers. We discussed how these workshops offer family members and partners the opportunity to become ‘expert carers’ in their own right. Faced with inadequate knowledge as well as uncertainty over their own responses to the eating disorder, carers frequently experience a sense of helplessness. Feedback to date has shown that equipping them with the skills and training akin to those used by professionals can instil a great sense of mastery and empowerment over their loved one’s illness (Treasure et al., 2007). In this chapter we will describe and discuss alternative methods of delivering skills training to an even wider audience. The rationale behind this is to address issues of high demand, scarce resources and geographical and time constraints.
