ABSTRACT
The social and emotional needs of children and young people should be at the heart of educational thinking. Children who are unhappy or unsettled do not flourish in school. They are unlikely to make best use of their learning experiences and most probably will underachieve. This chapter looks at the key factors that underpin successful social and emotional development as well as personal fulfilment, with special reference to potential high flyers.
