Natural gas and authoritarianism in Turkmenistan

The fate of Turkmenistan, at both domestic and international levels, is closely tied to its hydrocarbon deposits, particularly its natural gas wealth. Natural gas was first developed and extracted during the Soviet period, and after Turkmenistan became an independent state in 1991 the natural gas sector gradually emerged as the locomotive of the country’s economic and political development.
