ABSTRACT

How in the world do I help partners remember why they married when it seems years since they knew? How do I help heal the narcissistic injuries that cripple sensuality and create contempt? A couples group is only as effective as the couples involved and the clinical work accomplished (Figure 4.1). Clinical work is done with each couple in and outside the group. Clinical work precedes their entering the group and lasts beyond the last group meeting. Early work prepares couples to enter the group. Once couples leave the group to try their newly won skills, they still need ongoing clinical support to prevent relapse. This chapter reviews key concepts in working with couples both in and out of a group setting.
