ABSTRACT

Overview Educational research is one lens that can be used to understand current events, public discourse, and existing political climates. Latino education research is especially political and frequently has the objective of illuminating the schooling conditions and challenges that Latino students face in U.S. schools. To address these challenges, Latino education research draws on and creates critical methodologies that give agency to students’ lived experiences. Th is chapter examines three methodological trends in Latino education research: (a) methodologies centering race and racism, (b) methodologies documenting family cultural resources and strengths, and (c) methodologies exploring ethnic identity. We argue that these methodologies have been instrumental in shaping emancipatory and critical research.
