Pompeii reveals to us how the Romans used their acute skills as architects andurban designers to serve their distinctive and clearly defined civic needs. In 89 BC the Romans took over an already flourishing Pompeii and spent 150 years rebuilding, refitting and reconstructing it. In AD 79 they were still not finished reshaping Pompeii, as any Roman city was always a work in progress. Described here is Pompeii’s urban character based on what is visible today.1
