ABSTRACT

Climate change is a political matter. This is true in the ways in which education for sustainability has been characterized, how and why climate change is occurring, and how we can think and act in ways that will help in the struggle for survival. This chapter will, in the context of climate change, refer to the nature of citizenship and discuss the meaning of citizenship education. It will explore the case study of England, where citizenship educators have according to analyses of offi cial publications largely neglected education for sustainable development, suggest what should be done, and provide two snapshots of possible futures. Throughout we will highlight the key issues that need to be considered in order for the implications of climate change to be taken on board fully by citizenship educators.
