ABSTRACT

There are many verses in the New Testament which could be selected to begin a discussion of the nature and implications of sanctification for Christian discipleship and theological expression. This passage from 1 Peter serves the purpose well because through the use of the term ‘holy’ it illustrates the central dynamics of the doctrine of sanctification. It also opens the way to commenting on some strengths and problems with John Wesley’s account of it, and the ways in which a Wesleyan form of a theology of sanctification can be of use for exploring and developing contextual methodologies within evangelical theology.
