ABSTRACT
Bringing in the newspaper, and reading it, and tuning in to the nightly newscast were once as natural and taken-for-granted as turning on a faucet. The news was ready and accessible, and accessing it was habit. Or we might consider it ritual rather than utility. The recurring act of news consumption has been communal, informed by deeper shared significance.
