COMMENTARY BY DONNEL B. STERN Unlike most contributors to this volume, I did not meet Sabe Basescu until I was in my late 40s. It happened at a meeting at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, one of the places where Basescu taught. (He also served on the board of directors of that institute and had been one of its founders.) I had been invited to deliver a paper, and I arrived to nd Basescu waiting there, delighted with the opportunity to meet me. He knew what I had written, which was very gratifying, and was generous and warm in his praise of it. I knew him by name, of course, and I have no doubt that I was even more pleased to meet him than he was to meet me. It was a mutual admiration society, as they say.
