Substance Abuse Counseling with Early Adolescent Males (Ages 12 to 18)

If you think about the basic biological and psychosocial developmental challenges that 12-to 18-year-old boys face as they mature, it is almost overwhelming to grasp the multi-layered aspects of their development, i.e., how their rapidly changing bodies intersect with their self-concept as boys, and how these elements are infl uenced by their peer’s comments, which in turn are aff ected by familial and societal expectations about what it means to be a man. These intertwined biopsychosocial elements have a powerful infl uence on how boys will make choices around drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes or marijuana, or choosing to use any other substances of abuse.
