There Were Three in the Bed: Discursive Desire and the Sex Lives of Swingers
In this chapter, I take the position that multi-partner sex-in this context, swinging-raises challenging theoretical questions about relationships and people and power. The kinds of questions raised evidently have much to do with sex, and as such, this topic easily devolves into high-handed moralist rhetoric. Wishing not to succumb to that and having the ability to steer this discussion elsewhere, I state that it is more productive to examine how prevailing notions about ‘normal’ sex are established and promoted and come to represent the kinds of sex one is advised to have. In keeping with the theme of this collection, this short essay is therefore an inquiry into normativity and into the different discourses that either enforce or challenge normative practices.
