ABSTRACT

Runner: Good morning everyone. Say, did you hear the story about the senator who visited the Pine Ridge Indian reservation and made many promises to the people about better roads, schools, and job opportunities? After each promise, the crowd shouted enthusiastically, “Hooya!” The senator gained more confidence with each response. After his speech the senator was invited to tour one of the Oglala buffalo ranches, but first they had to walk through a cattle pasture that was owned by a non-Indian. The senator was about to step in a cow pie but his guide warned him just in time. “Be careful, you are about to step in the hooya,” he said. (Laughter)

Our first presenter in this group of sessions we have described as relating to “poetic inquiry,” is Dr. Dalene Swanson. Her arts-based dissertation exemplifies how creative work can broaden the socio-political dimensions within any arena, in this case the field of mathematics education, and can help us to consider issues of ideology and hegemony more closely.
