ABSTRACT

The 2004 South Asian Tsunami is the most deadly tsunami events in history, killing over 225,000 and affecting eleven countries in South Asia including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India. It was triggered by the second largest earthquake ever recorded by seismograph, with a moment magnitude of 9.3 and an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The rupture fault zone is believed to extend for over 800 km, from Sumatra to Nicobar Islands near Burma in the north. Figure 1 shows a numerical simulation of the tsunami.
