Shear strength behavior of unsaturated compacted sandy soils

Geographically, unsaturated soils are widely distributed in semi-arid areas of the world (Fredlund & Rahardjo 1993). The upper surface of groundwater is called phreatic surface or groundwater table (WT). Failure of earth structures occurs due to change in WT and saturation condition of soils.
