ABSTRACT

Since the Anchorage (Alaska) and Niigata (Japan) earthquakes, great strides have been made in understanding the mechanism behind liquefaction and the conditions that make soils susceptible to it. However, most of the studies have concentrated on clean sands or sands with relatively small amounts of fines, with the assumption that the behaviour of sandy soils is similar to that of clean sands. Moreover, many studies have focused on the behaviour of sand and clay separately to simplify things.
