ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the development of various composite reinforcement systems for earth reinforcing material and their comparative study with other conventional reinforcements such as geogrids and geosynthetics. To fully understand the interface shear behavior of reinforcements in a given situation, shear tests of reinforcements embedded in soil are usually performed (Milligan & Palmeria 1987, Yasufuku & Ochiai 2005). In this research, shear tests of composite made with plain surface and rough surfaces along with ordinary reinforcements embedded in soil are carried out. Field application of the composite technology is demonstrated and a comparison between the proposed technique and the conventional one is made in terms of cost, strength, durability and frictional resistances. The paper also shows in what ways the composite embankment to flood disaster mitigation in Bangladesh is better than the existing structures.
