ABSTRACT
This book is a study of Renaissance literature in relation to a major part of its historical context. It is not about all the context; it does not pretend to full and rounded coverage. It focusses with special intensity one aspect-protestant Christianity. The advantages of highlighting this aspect are several: it is significant for a range of important writing in the period; it is widely misunderstood; and it brings into question traditional attitudes to literature.
