As academics, attending international conferences is, for many of us, one of the best perks that we enjoy. Since getting jobs in a business school ourselves, we have seen much more of the world than we would have expected to have seen courtesy of our former (public sector) jobs; what is more, we have been paid to do so. Perk it may be, but at certain times of the year, our lives as academics can be dominated by conferences.1 It’s not only presenting papers (along with all that’s involved in arranging and subjecting oneself to international travel) but it’s also having to present ourselves at conferences-both in the formal and the (often rather more challenging) informal arenas.
