Hanbao: The Chinese Hamburg in 2035

WithTHOMAS KRUEGER

In a newspaper comment from September 2006 about the activities in Hamburg focusing on China, the author complained about the dominance of Chinese business and culture in Hamburg. He missed the self-confidence of the German. From his point of view, the so-called dialogue between Germany and China is characterized by fear on the German side. The background of this commentary was that the conference languages at a recent Hamburg-Chinese business event were English and Chinese, not German. And the musicians, who played work by Hamburg-born composer Brahms at that conference, came from China. At the same time, the Chamber of Commerce is presenting a concept for a Chinese district. The proposal is to concentrate cultural, entertainment, business and other China-related facilities in the very centre of the city (see Figure 16.1).
