Access to education for girls in minority regions of Gansu: A geographic perspective
This chapter primarily discusses educational inequalities among ethnic minority communities in Gansu (甘肃), one of the poorest provinces in Western China. Such a focus requires particular attention to patterns of development among the relevant ethnic minorities.2 ‘Development’ as a concept is examined beyond its common association with economic growth and the process of modernization. Instead, we examine access to education. This basic public service is closely related to development and modernization in any society, but is often difficult to achieve for those living in remote and marginalized areas.
