ABSTRACT

In recent years clinical psychology has increasingly emphasised the use of psychological formulations as a basis for any intervention with people experiencing a mental health problem. Such a formulation is normally drawn up after a period of assessment and may be based on any number of different models of psychological functioning. Psychological formulations are of particular help when people have complex and long-standing difficulties, with many different factors involved. They can form the basis of a specific psychological intervention or of an entire care plan.
