ABSTRACT

The results presented here are linked to the field of construction management and are reflective of different practices in the countries in which the contributors are working. While all have academic affiliations, most have strong connections with industry. In many cases, the results represent the outcomes of research collaboration between universities and companies; in some cases, the relationship has been longstanding such that the results represent the more recent contributions. A theme running through this book is questioning traditional (i.e. linear) thinking and practices and how these impact the construction process in general. A linear way of thinking and acting is one that is based on the typical steps taken in the construction process. These steps follow a logical, technical structure – from concept to operations – and apply to almost all forms of construction. We can consider this approach from three perspectives in relation to the field of construction:

1 actors 2 developments 3 research and researchers.
