ABSTRACT

Th is chapter addresses the issue of cultural sensitivity (CS) as it relates to developing HIV prevention and sex education programs for racial/ ethnic-minority populations. Th e chapter begins with a rationale for culturally targeted and tailored behavior change programs and then presents a conceptual framework for developing culturally sensitive HIV and sexual education interventions. Next we discuss examples for how general cultural diff erences as well as diff erences directly related to HIV and sexual behaviors can be used to tailor HIV and sexual education programs. We conclude with recommendations for future research priorities. Th e chapter focuses on the predominant ethnic/ racial groups in the United States, although many of the principles discussed apply to populations outside the United States.
