ABSTRACT

Turning to mass media and specifically journalism the statistical story is much the same-women are not treated equally in and by the industry. Consider this:

• The portion of women holding executive newspaper positions at 137 newspapers with a circulation more than 85,000 increased only 2 percentage points between 2003 and February of 2006-when it rose to 29 percent-while the number of women newspaper publishers has remained steady, at 18 percent, according to Northwestern University’s Media Management Center (Arnold & Nesbitt, 2006).
