ABSTRACT

These women have not turned away from news as a whole; they have simply dropped out of reading newspapers. These newspaper dropouts remind us that news avoiders are more complex than their name suggests. Some news avoiders avoid all news all the time while others avoid a specific news medium such as newspapers, TV, cable news, newsmagazines or online news. Furthermore, this avoidance of news or a specific news medium can be deliberate or unintentional. Even so, regardless of intent, the consequence is the same: more and more consumers are ignoring news and news avoiders are growing and upsetting the equilibrium of the news media landscape.
