This chapter looks at how such disadvantaged students, where the need for meaningful and targeted help is so critical, can be supported. Using the model of a tried and internationally renowned Access Summer School that attracts students from across the globe, the key elements required to promote effective progression can be distilled and explored by others wishing to broaden and enhance the diversity of their student body. Guidance was identified at an early stage as being a crucial element of the Access Summer School. Naturally, summer is one of the times when new on-campus developments are tested, and piloting with Access Summer School students has been helpful in skills tuition, IT induction, the virtual learning environment and many other developments. Elements of the Access Summer School are available in modified form as part of the induction of all students, the development of online access student provision and even an undergraduate module in academic skills for example.
