Similar to how a birthday off ers an opportunity to celebrate life and a commemorative day recognizes an important event, an anniversary provides another milestone in time for celebration and refl ection. During the years leading up to the Chicago History Museum’s (formerly the Chicago Historical Society) (http:// www.chicagohistory.org) 150th anniversary, the education staff embraced this opportunity to refl ect on its own practices, to celebrate the museum’s accomplishments in interpreting history for diverse audiences, and to envision the possibilities for the future of museum education. Th e museum’s missions to collect, preserve, and interpret both the city’s and nation’s past has taken form over the years in a range of educational programs for both school and public audiences.
