ABSTRACT

The visual environment in a space contributes hugely to a person’s impression of the quality of the architecture of that space. It is an interesting exercise; whether a space appears pleasingly lit or poorly lit, to identify the visual components (windows, luminaire types and layout, surface colours and textures) and try to understand how they are contributing to the overall impression of the visual environment. In this chapter some design examples of successful lightings from different building types are described and some of their key features analysed.
