ABSTRACT

The prevailing climate at a site, and the nature of the site itself, are important considerations at the initial stages of a building design. Both parameters can be used to improve the environmental performance of the building and its surroundings (for instance, by allowing good solar access) and indicate where precautions should be taken to protect the building and its surroundings (for example, by sheltering from cold winds). This chapter will consider how site factors and site planning can affect the local environment and infl uence the design of a building.
