ABSTRACT

Above my desk is a photo of rough, calloused hands cradling the large bean seeds-vivid pink and streaked with maroon. The photograph (Figure 3.1) was taken as Anselmo1 told me of the ways in which he gauged the proper time for planting. Anselmo’s knowledge was vibrant, alive, and relevant to his community at the Pueblo of Zuni. For me, this photo is a reminder of a knowledge system that connects people in meaningful ways to their everyday world.
