ABSTRACT
Though debates regarding signs and their referents go back to the Greek pre-Socratic philosophers, what we know as the contemporary “science” of signs and sign systems first solidified near the end of the nineteenth century. The intersection of semiotics with film studies has a short, intense history, the effects of which are still being felt today.
