ABSTRACT

The chapters in this volume have illustrated the significance of the commercial home enterprise as a distinctive area of study equivalent to that of hotel studies or the study of family or small businesses. Exploration of the commercial home leads to extroversion of the concept beyond hospitality and tourism lenses and labels (notably, the latter are described as unhelpful by McIntosh and Harris in Chapter 7) and necessitates examination and understanding of broader social influences and relationships. This chapter discusses the key themes emerging from the contributions, and includes reflection on distinctive issues involved in researching the commercial home as well as proposing future research considerations. Thus, the chapter is intended to consolidate the variety of contributing chapters in the book as well as to build upon key themes from previous research.
