Self-drive tourism in South Africa with specific emphasis on caravanning

ByNEELS VAN HEERDEN

This chapter examines the structure and operation of the caravanning sector of the self-drive tourism industry in South Africa. In the South African context, caravan parks are used by people who are tenting as well as caravanners in a form of tourism referred to as camping and where individual participants are known as campers. The individual spaces where tents are pitched or caravans parked are referred to as caravan stands or simply stands. This chapter commences with an overview of camping (caravanning) in South Africa and, following a short literature review, examines the camping experience, drawing on qualitative and quantitative research.
