ABSTRACT

Voluntary sport organisations, like any other organisations, have obligations under law. To fulfil these can at times be no small task as the range and quantity of laws affecting the sector can make it difficult for voluntary organisations to keep abreast of the relevant laws and the latest developments. Unfortunately this chapter is not able to offer legal advice to voluntary sport organisations, as the subject is simply too large to cover! However, it is recognised that there are certain areas of law that repeatedly cause voluntary sport organisations anxiety. They include the following:

■■ governance issues ■■ the employment of coaches and support staff ■■ management of volunteers ■■ data protection rules ■■ child protection ■■ sale of alcohol by sport organisations ■■ gambling ■■ playing of music at sporting events ■■ health and safety.
