ABSTRACT

Introduction The boys told me I couldn’t play with them because I was a girl and I was Black . . . Some boys don’t want the girls to play because they are girls and I think that’s a real problem because we should all be able to do what we want to do. We should all be able to play – Maggie Mae, age 10. (Oliver and Hamzeh, 2010)

The purpose of this chapter is two-fold. In the first part, I will highlight three studies that illuminate some of what we have learned about how the intersections of gender, race and sexuality influence how girls experience their bodies, and how they experience their physical activity opportunities and participation. In the second part, I will discuss what we have learned about how to understand girls through collaborating with them to practise strategies for changing body and physical activity inequities as they see them.
