ABSTRACT
A useful survey of Wagner’s vocal and instrumental compositions, illustrated with some 358 musical examples and thirty-three visual illustrations; the last includes several facsimiles and, as frontispiece, a reproduction of awell-known 1860Wagner photograph. Bauer devotes brief chapters to Wagner’s fragmentary works (pp. 41-44), the early keyboard pieces (pp. 54-59), songs and arias (pp. 60-63) and orchestral compositions (93-97). Replaces a similar volume in the “Reclams Musikführer” series (Stuttgart, 1992; ISBN 3150103746) without altogether altering that volume’s contents.
