ABSTRACT

Wagner left behind him such an enormous legacy of primary source materials, musical and otherwise, that scholars today-although less frequently than before-are still identifying and describing its various parts and their individual and overall significance. In addition to published and unpublished sources for Wagner’s music dramas and instrumental compositions, there are autobiographical statements, diaries, collections of correspondence, and a variety of other artifacts to be considered. Furthermore, other individuals left us memoirs and reminiscences of Wagner. The following pages cannot possibly mention every published or unpublished Wagner source; in the case of reminiscences and letters published in periodicals, they do not even mention very many. On the other hand, most of the collections of correspondence and a good selection of prose publications are described below; so are most of the principal musical editions.
