Introduction: Ordinary scientists in extraordinary circumstances

This book is the result of the Scientifi c Research in World War II conference, which was organised by Museum Boerhaave, the Dutch national museum for the history of science and medicine, on 25 and 26 January 2007. The aim was to explore the infl uence of the extraordinary circumstances created by the war on scientists and their research. The result is this compilation of thirteen articles.
