ABSTRACT

The National Mall & Memorial Parks (National Mall) includes icons such as the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Constitution Gardens, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and World War II Memorial. A unit of the National Park Service (NPS), the National Mall contains some of the oldest protected park lands in the United States, which provide relaxation and recreation opportunities for tourists and residents (NPS 2007d). In addition, the park includes significant cultural resources and downtown visitor destinations such as Ford’s Theatre National Historic Site, the African American Civil War Memorial and Pennsylvania Avenue from the US Capitol to the White House. Museums on or near the National Mall, such as those operated by the Smithsonian Institution as well as the National Gallery of Art, National Archives and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, are separate entities from the National Mall.
