ABSTRACT

Hotels constitute one of the main, and still expanding, pillars of the tourism sector. Resource intensive and frequently ineffi cient systems and operational routines result in a considerable environmental impact. In consequence, many of the hotel companies now take on environmental responsibilities, develop relevant policies and programmes, and implement environmental monitoring and benchmarking of facility performance. To achieve environmental management and reporting success, reliable performance assessment tools are needed and relevant quantitative and qualitative information from individual facilities must be collected, often on a monthly basis. The EnergyStar Portfolio Manager is the exception that provides a document explaining the methodology used. The available literature on sustainability indicators provides guidance on the choice of relevant performance parameters and the information required. The transparency of the system ought to be ensured by detailed information on the computer system’s status, as well as the conversion factors and mathematical models used in the creation of output reports.
