ABSTRACT

There is immense confusion about the definition, role and importance of organizational capital.1 One powerful tool to clarify the role and importance of the various components of organizational capital is to visually map the strategic value creation in organizations.2 Such maps allow organizations to picture how they create value and most importantly what elements of organizational capital they require to do so.3 This in turn provides them with a blueprint of what to focus on, what to manage and what to measure. The aim of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the concept of mapping value creation, discuss various approaches and provide actual application examples to illustrate how this can be done in practice.
