ABSTRACT

Malaysia concluded its general election in March 2004 with a landslide victory for the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition party, one of the most successful victories since Malaysia’s independence in 1957. Th e BN received a strong mandate from the voters and secured about 90% of all parliament and state seats. While the dominance of the BN in Malaysia’s elections is nothing new, political campaigns have changed greatly during the past decade due to Malaysia’s economic development and the growing availability of new communication technologies.
