Much of today’s work is performed by teams. An integral part of ensuring the success of these teams in the complex environments in which they work is assessing their performance. Specifically, assessment is a critical component of determining readiness and providing feedback after training. The objective of this chapter is to identify the challenges currently facing practitioners in their efforts to assess team performance and to provide guidance regarding management of these challenges. Particular attention is paid to the difficulty in transitioning research into practice, a problem that often stems from a lack of research to inform the assessment process. We begin with an overview of the structure and functioning of teams and the current state of team performance measurement. Then, research is presented that investigates specific deficiencies regarding the assessment of team performance. Finally, based on the review and the research results, guiding principles regarding how best to assess team performance in complex environments are provided.
