ABSTRACT

Anyone who has had the experience of living and studying in a foreign country will understand the multiple adjustments made by foreign students who are enrolled in an American college or university. English as a Second Language (ESL) students try to cope with language and cultural changes that are exciting and exhausting. Add to that effort the need to develop an understanding of the organization and use of a complex, modern academic research library (ARL) one can appreciate how essential a program of information literacy is to this special category of students. This chapter describes one successful program of information literacy developed by librarians at the University of Florida (UF) for a unique and talented group of foreign students enrolled in the university’s English Language Institute (ELI).
