Approaches to the study of artificial sports surfaces

BySharon J. Dixon

Artificial sports surfaces have increasingly become the surface of choice in the majority of sports. Suggested advantages of these surfaces compared with natural playing surfaces include year round and repeated daily use, longevity, consistent surface properties and reduced maintenance (Kolitzus, 2003). Technical developments have led to materials being developed for use in specific sports surfaces and claims that performance is improved compared with natural playing surfaces.
