ABSTRACT

Physical activity and sport have been present in some form throughout history. These physical activity forms can be traced across the ages and include early representations as work, curative exercise and physical training and evolved into movements forms including physical education, sport, therapy, and recreation. Sport as we know it today has its roots from the rich history of physical activity and human movement. Sport is a highly visible entity in today’s society and seems most visibly represented through the Ancient and Modern Olympics. As sport has evolved across the centuries, new sport forms and opportunities emerged. Prior to the mid-twentieth century, those with physical, sensory or intellectual impairments had limited opportunities to participate in formal programmes of physical activity, physical education and organized sport competition. But contemporary society offers sport, including disability sport, as a viable option for youths and adults with disabilities; the opportunities span the social, educational, recreational, competitive and community-based purposes of physical activity and sport.
